Sound mats are a great support for reading and writing, but there’s nothing more frustrating than watching your child look at a sound mat for 10 minutes searching for ‘a’. There’s certainly no advantage to you just finding it for them in frustration.

Games are a fun way to help your child or children become familiar with the layout of the mat as well as encouraging their speed recognition of letters to read.

Fastest Finger

You will need for Fastest Finger
2+ players
A sound mat for each player (subscribe to our newsletter for a free phase 2 mat or purchase one from our store)
Aim of the game for Fastest Finger on the Sound Mat
To be the fastest player to find the correct letter.
Rules for Fastest Finger
VERSION 1 of Fastest Finger
One player must be the caller.
The other players are the seekers.
The caller calls out a sound from the mat and the seekers race each other to find it first.
VERSION 2 for Fastest Finger
Once your child is more secure on the sounds each letter makes, call out the letter names to help encourage your child the recognise them too.
Sound Mat Bingo

You will need for Sound Mat Bingo
2+ players
A sound mat for each player (subscribe to our newsletter for a free phase 2 mat or purchase one from our store)
A selection of counters
Aim of Sound Mat Bingo
To be the first to cover all of the sounds on your mat.
Rules:
VERSION 1 of Sound Mat Bingo
One player must be the caller.
The other players are the seekers.
The caller calls out a sound from the mat and the seekers race each other to find it first.
The winner places a counter on the won sound.
Repeat until 1 player has their mat completely full. They are the winner.
VERSION 2 of Sound Mat Bingo
Once your child is more secure on the sounds each letter makes, call out the letter names to help encourage your child the recognise them too.
Point and Shout

You will need for Point and Shout
2+ players
A sound mat for each player (subscribe to our newsletter for a free phase 2 mat or purchase one from our store)
The aim of the game for Point for Shout
To call out the chosen sound.
Rules:
VERSION 1 of Point the Finger Sound Mat Game
One player must be the pointer.
The other player is the caller.
The pointer points to a sound on the mat and the caller calls out the sound that letter makes.
TOP TIP: If there’s a sound that your child cannot remember, keep returning to it throughout the game to help them learn it.
