An Artsy Reading Comprehension to practice phonics including tricky words
Children often so much on decoding (breaking down or ‘reading’) the words in a text, that they don’t take in what they have actually read. Reading comprehension – the understanding of what has been read – is just as important as being able to read words. Even children who are fluent readers can struggle with the comprehension side of reading. This helps to crack blending, tricky words sight reading AND comprehension in one fell swoop!

- People outlines

How to Use Your Reading Cards
- Separate your cards into piles of each colour.
- Pick one card at random from each pile.
- Read the cards one at a time.
- Decorate your person shape as described on your cards.
Who is this appropriate for?
We have made several sets of cards to suit varying phonic levels and beyond phonics. Take a look to see what is most suitable for your little learner.
Set 1: Picture set (pre-reader)
This set is perfect for any little learners who have not learned to read yet, or need some support in developing their speech and language skills.
Set 2: Phonics Phase 2
Phase 2 is the phase in phonics where children learn the basic phonemes and graphemes to read very simple and short words.
Set 3: Phonics Phase 3
Phase 3 sees many digraphs and a trigraph introduced to your little learner’s reading and writing. This set will help them to get extra practice with these with a useful context.
Set 4: Phonics Phase 4
Phase 4 teaches your children to read words where there are adjacent consonants in word to begin reading longer words with confidence.
Set 5: Phonics Phase 5
Phase 5 throws alternative spellings for previously learned graphemes, such as ‘ai’ also being ay/ey/eigh/a/a-e/ei.
Set 6: Beyond Phonics
This set just throws all sorts of words at your readers and looks to expand their vocabulary with a variety of adjectives to challenge their comprehension skills appropriately.
