Need to encourage reading and writing? Do you want to find new, relevant ways to encourage reading with your little learner? To encourage writing? To encourage them to draw more? Then this ‘feel good’ Valentine’s activity is perfect for you to try. There’s even a FREE PRINTABLE! What’s not to love?

Our home hub has never really ‘celebrated’ Valentine’s Day, but for whatever reason, our 6 year old LOVES it. She’s been talking about it since Christmas and even kept her small pink Christmas tree out to decorate appropriately for the occasion. I have to admit, her passion is rather contagious.
Having been helping her with her learning during the partial school closures in lockdown, my usually eager little reader/writer has opted to do minimal of both. She’s recently started to show a rejuvenated enthusiasm for both again and I want to strike whilst the iron is hot!

My husband and I have both written a soppy little note to greet our little learner on Valentine’s morning. She’s a pretty capable reader, so we’ve written a reasonable amount. However, for those with early reading skills, you might like to reduce the amount you write and think carefully about your word choices.

Our little one loves to read about herself, so this is certainly something that will peak her interest and other children like her.

We’ve also cut out and left a few blank hearts on the table. Of course she’s not the only one in our house that likes to read nice things about themselves. Having received some loving compliments, I’m fairly sure she will want to return the favour and probably write some for her best friend and her grandparents.

If your child isn’t at the point of writing just yet, these are still useful! There are many stages of writing. There are blank hearts without lines for your little ones to draw or print on (mark making at all stages is important). The lined hearts could have a little comic strip of images going along each line or can be used for play writing (to your child it may make perfect sense).

We’ve also put out some colouring pages and her favourite pens, so she has more choice or can switch between the two for a little break or variety. Give it a try. DOWNLOAD FOR FREE!
