As mentioned in our post on Reading Feelings, being able to understand images goes a long way to helping children understand word reading later on as well as improve social skills, reading other people, empathy and understanding people’s actions.

In our daily Reading a Picture posts, we will share an image or video with some suggested questions attached. These might be from other websites, from books or ones that we have made ourselves. You can purchase a package of these activities in one go here.
The questions will help develop several skills needed in reading and can be adapted for all ages. They help children practise:
- finding literal meanings
- explaining new vocabulary
- retrieving information
- interpreting information
- understanding choices made by the author, director or artist
