One of the resources that we were given was a set of Magnetic Word Tiles with the high-frequency words for reception year on when my kids started school. We placed them on the fridge and then pretty much left them there! It wasn’t until we started to struggle with learning to read that we found them useful. Here are 2 simple ways of using these Magnetic Tiles with a small whiteboard to help with learning to read and write with these simple hands-on activities for home.

High-Frequency Words

High-frequency words often called sight words are those words that your child will learn to read without sounding out that form the basis of sentence structure.

You can find the words for each week of the phase your child is on in the weekly activity posts or check out our List of High-Frequency Words to find ones to use in these activities.

Activity 1 – Matching Words

  1. Take the high-frequency words you are working on for the week (or include and review previous week’s words) and place on one side.game to play with kids using magnetic word tiles whilst learning to read
  2. Write the words on the board
  3. Ask your child to match up the words whilst reading out loud to you.game to play with your child to support them learning to read

Activity 2 – Write it out

Writing and reading are connected your child will learn the two at the same time. In this activity get your child to copy the words so that muscle memory helps with letter recognition as well.

  1. Choose the words for the week or review past words.
  2. Place down the side of the whiteboard.
  3. Write out the word for them.
  4. Then get your child to copy the words.
