So phase 2 phonics is all covered and you’ve had great fun in the process! Excellent. Then you and your child are ready to discover the fascinating world of phase 3 phonics!

jvwx activities for phase 3 phonics-1

If your child is not secure on these sounds (they can recognise and write each one with a reasonable amount of confidence AND put them into words), please take a look at our upcoming practical activities, but adapt them to revise the phase 2 sounds BEFORE you move on to phase 3. Phase 3 has some tricky letters and letter combinations involved, so go at your child’s pace; it’s not a race.

Which letters and sounds are we learning this week?

Week 1 of our phase 3 journey see us focusing on the phonemes (sounds) and graphemes (written letters) J, V, W and X.

Your child will need to learn the letter names like you say them when saying the alphabet (A, B, C) as well as the letter sounds. This is the same for the digraphs (2 letter sounds) for example ‘S and S’ make the ‘ss’ sound.

They will likely be presented with both the UPPERCASE (capitals) and lowercase (not capitals) for the 1-letter sounds. When writing, they may focus on the lowercase formation, to begin with.

Which high-frequency words are we learning this week?

None. Zilch. Zero. No HFW this week BUT take a look at our High-Frequency Word activities for some ideas to revise the ones learned so far.

What can we do with this week’s sounds?

Each week for this phase, we will try and hit 3 types of activities for the set of sounds we will introduce. They will be: sensory/hands-on letter familiarisation, build a word and either an HFW or sentence activity.

This week, we’d like to share these engaging activities with you:

salt dough letters made by a child leave to dry over night

Sensory: Creating Salt Dough Letters

making words with scrabble tiles a simple learning to read and spell activity for kids

Build a Word: Using Scrabble Tiles

using reception year magnetic word tiles to help learn to read

HFW: Reading and Writing HFW Using Magnetic Word Tiles

What words can I create?

Don’t forget to mix this week’s letters with those letters from previous weeks. That way, you can keep practising them and you can create a wider range of words.

For ideas on the simple, HFW and tricky words you can create with the letters we’ve learned so far, please look at our word lists.
