These simple hands-on, practical activities and play ideas are great. They are great for pre-schoolers and reception age children as they begin their journey learning to read.
Jolly Phonics Phase 2
In phase 2 of the Jolly Phonics scheme, children start to learn phonemes and the first few digraphs. To learn more about Letters and Sounds or Jolly Phonics, follow the links.
It is normally split into 5 week sections in the reception year. The following week is often use to secure and review. In pre-school, children tend to learn 1 letter sound a week.
We have split the activities below into those that you can use to:
- start to sound out the phonemes and digraphs.
- then use to build words and read words together.

Create your own sensory letters using pipe cleaners. You can then use these to trace as you sound out the phonemes or to practice letter formation.
Simple Sensory Alphabet Bottle Game
Hide your week's letters within the sensory bottle and ask your child to say the letter that they find. Can they also find things in the room that start with that letter?
Homemade Tissue Paper Sensory Letters
Another DIY sensory alphabet activity this is one that children can do too. The tearing and scrunching of the tissue paper helps to build the fine motor skills needed for writing.
Building the Word with Blocks - 2 and 3 letter words
As you start to form the first few words dig out the blocks and create words with the blocks. Mega blocks or Lego Duplo work especially well for this activity.
Build a Word: Using Scrabble Tiles
Scrabble tiles are great for using as you start to learn to read. Build words from the phonemes and digraphs that your child knows and get them to segment and blend the words.
Salt Tray Letters and Words Activity
Use a DIY salt tray and help your child with letter formation as they trace out the letters in the coloured salt
Peg and Popsicle Stick Words
Using popsicle sticks and clothes pegs you can create a simple activity that allows children to practice their blending to read new words.
