This is a really simple activity to support learning to read, write and spell. We’ve used coloured salt in our version. However, play sand, soil, glitter or plain table salt works just as well. Store whichever material you use in a jar, then it’s something that you can bring out and use frequently. So here we go learning writing and spelling with a simple Salt Tray Activity for kids.

How to set up a salt tray for use with kids to support learning to write and read.
Materials
- Salt
- Food Colouring
- Baking Tray
Optional
- Magnetic Letters
- High Frequency Word Cards
- Picture Cards e.g. from our Verb Pack
Tools
- Spoon
- Paint Brush
Instructions
- In a bowl mix the salt and food colouring together. For a more vibrant colour add more food colouring.
- Place in the baking tray and shake to even out.
- Set up for your child with letters, numbers, words or pictures depending on their ability level.
